Description & Outcome This team of CARDTS spreads mass awareness messages on throughout the state of Karnataka using methodologies such as street plays, puppet shows and other cultural programmes. It deals with issues related to HIV/AIDS, women’s empowerment, gender rights and child rights.

The “Prayathna” team has conducted over 1000 shows so far.

Project name Sangaathi
Target Population High risk groups, namely MSM (Men who have Sex with Men), IDU (Intravenous Drug Users) and FSW (Female Sex Workers) and their clients, the bridge population.
Location Located at Sira covering 5 talukas of Tumkur district.
Funding (Project Status) Karnataka State AIDS Prevention Society, KSAPS.
Description & Outcome These 3 Targeted Intervention (TI) projects aim to reduce the rate of HIV infection through IDU and sexual mode of transmission by reaching out to MSM, IDU, FSW and their clients who form the bridge populations. The specific objectives of the composite intervention SAVP are: • To increase concern for self protection amongst FSW, IDU and MSM • To provide quality STD treatment facilities to all FSW, MSM at least 2 times very year through Government health care facilities • To ensure that at least 70% of FSW and MSM use condoms correctly and consistently during every sexual encounter • To network with all key stakeholders in the district for successful implementation of the programme The key strategies used are Peer Educator’s approach to reach Behaviour Change Communication (BCC) as well as creation of linkages to sexual health services. The BCC through one-to-one and one-to-group interactions promotes safer sex practices amongst these high risk groups. The outcome is the formation of FSW CBOs / collectives which ensure the sustainability of the programme.

Project name Samudhaya Arogya Vahini Programme (SAVP)
Target Population High risk groups, namely MSM (Men who have Sex with Men), IDU (Intravenous Drug Users) and FSW (Female Sex Workers) and their clients, the bridge population.
Location Located at Mangalore covering 3 talukas of Dakshin Kannada district. Karnataka, India

Description & Outcome This composite Targeted Intervention (TI) project, SAVP, aims to reduce the rate of HIV infection through IDU and sexual mode of transmission by reaching out to MSM, IDU, FSW and their clients who form the bridge populations. The specific objectives of the intervention are: • To increase concern for self protection amongst 60% of the 553 FSW and 169 IDU and MSM • To provide quality STD treatment facilities to all FSW, MSM at least 2 times very year through Government health care facilities • To ensure that at least 70% of FSW and MSM use condoms correctly and consistently during every sexual encounter • To network with all key stakeholders in the district for successful implementation of the programme The key strategies used are Peer Educator’s approach to reach Behaviour Change Communication (BCC) as well as creation of linkages to sexual health services. The BCC through one-to-one and one-to-group interactions promotes safer sex practices amongst these high risk groups. The project operates through its 12 well trained, active and skilled Peer Educators. Description & Outcome This HIV preventive rural intervention has 4 programme components, namely: • HIV prevention in rural high risk groups • HIV prevention in rural vulnerable populations • Community based care, support and treatment • Capacity building and systems strengthening in Karnataka The strategies followed include community mobilization through focus group discussions, World AIDS Day events, World Women’s day celebrations through staff, volunteers and peers. An enabling environment is created through interaction with Purasabha members, lodge owners and managers, FSWs, auto-rickshaw and tempo drivers MSM and positive peoples networks.

Target Population ANC attendees - pregnant women
Location Dakshin Kannada district, Karnataka, India

Description & Outcome The “Sahrudaya” programme was launched by NACO in 2005, to address the growing numbers of HIV infected women and paedriatic AIDS in India. It aimed at creating awareness on PPTCT (Prevention of Parent To Child Transmission) services amongst pregnant women. In Karnataka it was initiated in Puttur, Mangalore, Bantwal, Belthangadi and Sullia areas in Dakshin Kannada district. The specific objectives of this programme included: • Building awareness about PPTCT services amongst pregnant women • Referring pregnant women to PPTCT services • Encouraging pregnant women to go in for HIV testing • Motivating pregnant women to go in for hospitalised delivery • Educating mothers about breast feeding • Offering nutritional support to the mothers • Providing counselling support to the pregnant women, their spouses and families • Creating linkages to Positive Networks and referring them to other need-based services The trained programme staff carried advocacy and sensitisation exercises with the community key persons such as “Anganwadi” workers and teachers about the programme. Then they imparted information about HIV/AIDS and STDs to the target population of pregnant women through one-to-one discussions, group discussions, house visits, community visits and “Anganwadi” visits. They demonstrated correct and consistent condom use and also distributed condoms. They used communication aids such as flip-charts, slide shows and also conducted street plays to pass on key messages. Once a pregnant women tested positive, the field workers conducted follow-up home visits and offered counselling to the women and their families. They also gave them information about various support services providing treatment and introduced them to the local Positive Networks. They also gave them information about where they could go for availing blood tests for the newly born child at the 12th and 18th month. The programme was successfully conducted through 4 Community Health Centres and 68 Primary Health Centres in the district. It created linkages within the community, good relations with the Government departments and support service providers and spread awareness about HIV/AIDS in the community. It also led to significant increases in pregnant women opting for HIV testing and marginal increases in women opting for hospitalised deliveries.

Description & Outcome This ‘Comprehensive District HIV/AIDS Program’ is a rural intervention in Udupi district . It targets the most-at-risk populations (IDUs, MSM and FSW), bridge populations (youth, migrants and drivers) and adults and children living with HIV. The project also aims at reaching out to pregnant women through the PPTCT. It is showcased as a learning site.
